Install NIS Server for Windows

Network Information System (NIS) is a centralized User, Group administrative management in Linux environment.

The administrator can easily create, modify, and delete user accounts for Windows and UNIX domains at the same time

Windows – Requirements

Follow these steps to integrate the NIS in Active Directory.

Allow you easily manage users and groups.

Step 1

  1. Start with installing Active Directory Domain Controller (install with dcpromo command line)
  2. Next, install “Server for NIS” components with server PowerShell (Administration permission)
  • Windows 2008/2008 R2  

Open PowerShell and copy paste this command, the command installing Server for NIS components. *restart required  

ServerManagerCmd.exe -install ADDS-Identity-Mgmt -restart

  • Windows 2012 (PowerShell)

Dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:adminui /all

Dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:nis /all

Dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:psync /all

Step 2

Open “Active Directory Users and Computers” and create a new Organisation Unit (OU) “LinuxUsers

Create a new group for “LinuxUsers” in Active Directory.

Right click on the group “LinuxUsers” >Properties > go to  “UNIX Attributes

Add your domain to NIS Domain also you need to configure the Group ID:

Create new “LinuxUser“.

Go To “UNIX Attributes” tab Add your NIS Domain > add UserID (UID)>add the “Primary Group Name(GID).

Step 3

Configure NisSvc service to start automatically.

Open PowerShell to add these commands:

sc config NisSvc start= auto

Restart NisSvc  service:

net stop NisSvc

net start NisSvc

Done… Now make sure the NIS database is working:

ypcat -d domain passwd
