Network Information System (NIS) is a centralized User, Group administrative management in Linux environment.
The administrator can easily create, modify, and delete user accounts for Windows and UNIX domains at the same time
Windows – Requirements
Follow these steps to integrate the NIS in Active Directory.
Allow you easily manage users and groups.
- Start with installing Active Directory Domain Controller (install with dcpromo command line)
- Next, install “Server for NIS” components with server PowerShell (Administration permission)
- Windows 2008/2008 R2
Open PowerShell and copy paste this command, the command installing Server for NIS components. *restart required
- Windows 2012 (PowerShell)
Open “Active Directory Users and Computers” and create a new Organisation Unit (OU) “LinuxUsers“
Create a new group for “LinuxUsers” in Active Directory.
Right click on the group “LinuxUsers” >Properties > go to “UNIX Attributes“
Add your domain to NIS Domain also you need to configure the Group ID:
Configure NisSvc service to start automatically.
Open PowerShell to add these commands:
Restart NisSvc service:
Done… Now make sure the NIS database is working:
